One of the reasons that I enjoy setting myself small woodworking projects, is the positive mental health aspects that they can bring. Many of the things that I have made can be replaced very easily with ready-made IKEA furniture. There are plenty of relatively cheap coffee tables available to buy.
But, I get a sense of fulfilment and enjoyment at having created something that didn’t exist beforehand, other than as an idea in my head. Sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming if I have set myself something that is a bit overly ambitious. But completing a project from start to finish can be very satisfying, and provides me with many benefits for the duration of the task.
Here are a few benefits that I enjoy by undertaking woodworking projects:
- Setting myself short term and achievable goals
- Seeing a project through from start to finish
- Enjoying the creative process
- The feeling of making something using your hands
- Learning new skills and problem solving
- Conducting research and seeing what other people are doing
Here is a great blog by the Woodworkers Institute that detail some of the Mental and Physical Benefits of Woodworking as a hobby.
This article outlines some important benefits that make woodworking a really great hobby to have. Some additional ones that I haven’t listed above are the patience and perseverance needed. This is especially true if it doesn’t work out perfectly first time.
I think learning how to use machinery and tools is also a good skill to learn. Some tools such as power drills and saws can be quite intimidating at first. But learning how to respect them and use them safely is a really important skill. Reducing any risk and potential injury is an absolute must.
I recently bought a power mitre saw. This would help me to cut wood pieces at precise angles. At first, I was surprised by the power. Once I got to grips with the way it worked it is a great tool to have. This initial surprise helped me to respect the tool. It also reminded me of the importance of being cautious and to follow the safety protocols provided by the manufacturer.
I have learnt lots of different things from some of my projects. One of my favourite feelings is the feeling of accomplishment I get when I overcome a problem. If something doesn’t work the way I thought it would it can be frustrating. But being aware that not everything works first time can help to reduce any potential stress or frustration. It’s all part of the process.
